Helpful Tips for First Time Campers

You want to be somewhat organized when packing your vehicle for your camping trip. Don’t just grab stuff and throw it in the car or truck. You should pack the things you’ll need last first, and the things you’ll need first should be packed last. Does that make sense?

When you arrive at the campsite, the first thing you’ll probably need is your tent, ground tarp, stakes, and anything else needed to set up the tent. Because you’ll most likely set up the tent first, you’ll need to get to it first, so you pack it last. See, there is a method to this madness after all!

Next would be your sleeping bags, pillows, blankets, clothes, and any other items that would be kept inside the tent. You could leave most of your clothes in the vehicle until you actually need them, as this would allow for more room in the tent.

If you have a screen house, now would be a good time to set it up. Once that is done, you can put all the cooking and dining items inside. A folding table is a good item to have so you can keep stuff off the ground. Any coolers you bring can usually be put under the table where they’ll be out of the way.

If it’s raining when you arrive at the campsite, you have two choices as to what to do. You can wait until it stops raining before unloading (and it may not stop for a while, if at all), or you can unload in the rain. If you choose to go ahead and unload, I would suggest you put on your raingear, set up both the tent and the screen house, then unpack the rest of your gear. That way you’ll be able to immediately put everything under cover so as to keep it from getting wet any more than necessary.

Speaking of getting wet, if you know it’s supposed to rain all weekend, I suggest you cancel your plans for going camping. Rain is not a friend of the tent camper. If there is nothing to do indoors at the campground when it’s raining, you could be in for a long, miserable weekend. It gets very uncomfortable sitting in your tent for two days with nothing to do except wishing you were somewhere else. It’s even worse if you have kids with you. Remember though, if you camp a lot, sooner or later you will get rained on. Accept it as part of the camping experience and be prepared for it.

If you’re a newbie to camping, don’t travel too far from home your first time out. Try to get a ‘feel’ for camping to see if it’s right for you. Unforeseen problems could occur that you’re not sure how to deal with. What if you have problems with your equipment? What if you can’t sleep comfortably in a sleeping bag or on a cot? What if the weather should suddenly change for the worse? Any number of things could happen to make you want to leave early. Stay closer to home until you get a few trips under your belt.

I must warn you though, that in spite of all the discomforts and inconveniences that you may endure while camping, you will look back at these outdoor experiences as wonderful, cherished memories.
